Liposuction Procedure and Aftercare

Jun 1 • 2 minute read

Is your exercise program failing to get rid of those last five to ten stubborn pounds? Liposuction can be used to complete the body sculpting that started with your gym time. Finding an experienced plastic surgeon to work with can give you confidence and ensure you get the best results from your liposuction surgery.

What to Do Before Liposuction

Before surgery, it is important that you receive a medical evaluation and have blood work done to confirm that you are physically ready for the procedure. If you are on medications that may interfere with successful surgery, such as pills to thin your blood, you may be asked to stop or adjust them about two weeks before your scheduled liposuction appointment. Talk to your primary physician about modifying prescription medicines before you do it. You will also want to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and supplements to avoid excessive bleeding.

Caring for Your Body After Liposuction

There are several ways to improve the cosmetic results of your surgery as well as your physical health. We also encourage you to stop smoking, if not for good, then at least for two weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of complications. You can also encourage faster healing by following these guidelines:

Use a compression garment. You just had fat cells removed, and your body will want to fill the void with fluid. This garment will help limit your body’s natural ability to do so and will support the area in taking on its new shape. Wear your compression garment for several weeks after the swelling has gone down to help stabilize your body’s new shape.

Move your body. Remaining stationery will not help your body recover, and neither will strenuous activity. Start walking after the first or second week to promote healthy blood circulation and minimize your chances for blood clots. Massage and light stretching exercises are also recommended. Wait for clearance by your doctor at your final exam four to six weeks after the surgery to begin any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting.

Eat Healthily. Your body will swell for several days after treatment, so it is important to stay hydrated. Also, limit your fat and caloric intake to improve the long-term effects of the surgery. The removed fat cells cannot grow back, but new ones can form if you are not careful. Liposuction does not replace weight-loss or weight-management programs, so maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise will help you keep your new figure.

Care for your body while it is healing. Healing times vary for each patient, but you can expect to experience swelling during the first two weeks, and some areas may remain swollen for the first few months. Wearing your compression garment, eating right, and exercising will all help to maintain your figure and give time for your skin to tighten. Most people see all residual swelling resolve after six months, and tissue tightening can continue for the rest of the year.

Liposuction produces great results for most patients and helps get rid of that muffin top or hip bulges that prevent your clothes from fitting comfortably. If you are looking to create a flatter abdomen or more slender waist, liposuction can help you achieve your goals. Contact our office to schedule a liposuction consultation today!
