How to Manage Breast Augmentation Complications

Jun 11 • 1 minute read

Most breast augmentation procedures result in very few complications or side effects. However, like any type of cosmetic surgery, breast implants require monitoring throughout your lifetime and complications can arise.

Even under the best conditions, no implant lasts forever. Sometimes mistakes happen, or the body reacts poorly with the implant, or the implant itself fails. Potential complications of breast augmentation include infection, issues with anesthesia, bleeding, hematoma, and poor scarring.

Common Complications

The important thing to remember is that implant problems can almost always be corrected and that it all starts with a consultation. Problems, goals and expectations can be identified and solutions can be presented. Some of the more common breast augmentation complications include:

Capsular Contracture: The capsule is a pocket of scar tissue that forms around breast implants. The tissue can harden and its shape can become distorted and may cause pain. The condition may require re-operation or implant removal and may occur more than once in the same implant.

Rupture or Deflation: Rupture is a tear or hole in the outer shell of a breast implant causing solution to leak from the shell. Some implants rupture in the first few months after surgery and some after several years. Ruptures are not considered dangerous but it is recommended that you have the implant removed, the pocked cleaned out and the implant replaced.

Implant Rippling: This happens when the tissue overlying the implant sticks to the implant on the inner area of the breasts. Rippling after breast augmentation surgery is more common with textured implants, saline implants, and in women with very thin breast skin and little breast tissue. Breast implant revision surgery is the best solution for implant rippling.

Double Bubble: When the implant rides too high on the chest wall and the breast tissue falls below. This causes the implants to sit too high on the chest, with the saggy skin remaining below. The best way to correct the issue is to remove the implants and replace them.
